Wear resistant sliding member

Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a wear resistant sliding member maintaining superior sliding characteristics and wear resistance over a long period by directly forming an undercoat layer of TiN on the surface of a base material and then forming a surface layer consisting of MoS 2 or a mixture of MoS 2 and C 2 F 4 on the above layer to a specific thickness. CONSTITUTION: An undercoat layer 3 consisting of TiN excellent in wear resistance is directly formed on the surface of a base material 1 composed of stainless steel, etc. A surface layer 2 consisting of MoS 2 or a mixture of MoS 2 and C 2 F 4 is formed on the above undercoat layer 3. The thickness of this surface layer 2 is regulated to one-half or more the maximum height as the surface roughness of the base material 1. Further, it is preferable to regulate the mixing proportion of either of the components of the mixture mentioned above to about 1 to 10vol.%. By this method, the wear resistant sliding member excellent in sliding characteristics and having the undercoat layer 3 excellent in wear resistance even in the case when the surface layer 2 is worn can be obtained.
